Houndiscombe Road Bridge
Michael L. Roach
Lots of interesting pictures of the last HST workings including a nice one of an HST passing under Houndiscombe Road, Plymouth by Jon Morley. When the line was built through here in 1848-49 it was through fields because this was the northern outskirts of the town of Plymouth. There were no stations in the vicinity. Mutley was opened in 1871 and North Road in 1877 with just a quarter mile between them. The bridge carrying Houndiscombe Road was a typical Brunelian one, of which many examples remain, spanning the two tracks. By the 1930s the bridge was causing a bottleneck in the station throat of Plymouth North Road. The existing bridge was demolished and rebuilt by the GWR as shown here in an article from the GWR Magazine for December 1938. This was the heyday of the GWR with some of the yearly bound volumes of the magazine having more than 600 pages.

Regards, Mike

The 'Reiniscences of a Retired Inspector' and 'A Good Word from the Footplate' also make very interesting reading.
Very many thanks to Michael L. Roach and of course to Jon Morley and credits to the GWR Magazine.

Hi Keith,

The leaf-fall season seems to be upon us again.

The RHTT  3S82 Totton to Totton via Honiton made its first trip today, and is seen passing Crewkerne Station.
MPVs  DR98977 and DR98927 were used.  Please see photos.

Best wishes

Bill
