Return of hoppers after time at
Looe
Guy Vincent
On the gloomy but dry morning of Wednesday September 14th 70812 with five HQA ballast hoppers and 70817 in tow approaches Westbury South junction and passes 'Dilton Marsh 10' public foot crossing at 110m 51ch with Tuesday evening's 6C42 1924 Westbury - Looe - Westbury ballast working. This train was recently featured by regular CRS contributor, driver Alan Peters, as it carried out its duties on the branch.   Once in the yard at Westbury 70817 was detached and 70812 then hauled the hoppers a short distance before reversing them into the virtual quarry sidings for refilling.  By chance I needed to go to into Westbury on my rest day so took the opportunity to catch this working en-route.

Regards to all, Guy Vincent

Westbury Digest
Guy Vincent

Apologies for the late submission of these images which were all taken last weekend.  I had a problem with my laptop that required a good deal of time to fix hence the delay.  I hope they will still be of interest.

Saturday 10th September  CHIPPENHAM   1 and 2) 158767 departs with the 2M27 1510 Swindon-Westbury via Melksham. This was in the station for a few minutes as it has to wait for the eastbound 2M20 1505 Westbury-Swindon to clear Thingley East Jcn, the line from Bradford Jcn being only single track.   Right behind 2M27 was WCRC's recently repainted 47813 (formerly named SS Great Britain when operated by BR and FGW) with the 5Z31 1409 Southall-Bristol Kingsland Road ECS for Sunday's Bristol- Par excursion behind LMS 6233.

Sunday 11th September
3 and 4) 37175 with test train consisting of vehicles 96604 6122 9808 62287 and 9701 passing the A361 under bridge at Berkley Marsh with 3Q37 1009 Westbury-Merehead-Derby RTC ultrasonic test train.   Then captured approaching Bradford-on-Avon led by 9701 en-route to Derby.  Later in the week the train was back on the WR again working off Bristol Kingsland Road!

5) A bonus shot of 37175 with the test train in the yard at Westbury on the morning of Saturday 10th.  I was engaged in a routine 'refresh' of the DMU sidings and walking routes and seeing this revived memories of happy times 40 plus years ago when Saturday mornings often involved a visit to Westbury for a look round the diesel depot and any new locos to 'cop'.  This area was where the depot fuelling road sidings were located.

With regards, Guy Vincent
