'Icon Of Speed' with an impeccable history of reliability for over 40 years, first-built class 43 HST power car 43002 arrived at the former GWR railway works site during the evening of July 16th, having been brought from Laira depot on a low-loader. It is due to remain here until Friday 19th when it will be taken north to it's final destination, the Great Hall of the National Railway Museum in York for a well-earned retirement. This power car epitomises the principle of 'Safety with Speed to the West' which was the aim of the old GWR for many years. It was a pleasure to travel up to Swindon to see this loco sitting outside the STEAM museum with the new class 800s passing every few minutes on the main line beyond the works.
