Special to Minehead
Martin Duff

33029/33025 worked the 07.13 Paddington - Minehead today. The train reached Bishops Lydeard at 10.20 and followed a service train up the branch. The hot weather resulted in a ban on steam traction. All WSR services were booked class 33, making the railway wall to wall class 33 action. We surmised this must have been the first time the WSR service and incoming charter had all been worked by the same class of locomotive. That was until lunchtime when one of the class was removed at Williton for attention and a Hymek worked to Minehead and return. To avoid further detail, the 33 ran light back to Bishops Lydeard just after 15.00 and picked up the 16.30 to Minehead with the Hymek on the back (detached at Williton). The mainline special left Bishops Lydeard at 17.00 for Paddington. An altogether interesting day, if not a hot one - the temperature in the signal box was 80F by 08.30.

Many thanks Martin, glad you were out and about to capture the scene. Your mention of the temperature in the box as being 80 deg F means a lot more to me, being an old timer, than 26.6667 deg C !!
