Fowey Harbour this afternoon (11th August 2023)  - 66199 with the final loaded CDA train in. Of interest is the traverser used to unload and re-Marshall the train.

Will this be the last use of the
CDA's
Mick House
Friday 11th August 2023 my friend Andrew Keast and myself spent a the day in search of the last (or is it) train of CDAs to carry China Clay to Fowey Dock, over 400 photos later, bumping in to some familiar faces on the way Nigel Tregoning and David Letcher to mention a couple a great day out was had.
I say will it be the last day of the CDAs, as the loco that was sent up to Long Marston a couple days ago to pick up the replacement JIA wagons returned empty-handed.
Forming the 6P07 and leaving 26 minutes early at 06.55 from Fowey Dock Carne Point to Parkandillack, stopping 112 minutes early at 08.11 at Burngullow.
Photo 1) Shows our train being pulled by class 66 199 and consisting of 36 CDAs crossing from the down main over the up main and heading through the exchange sidings at Burngullow.
Photos 2 & 3) The shunter hands over a two way radio and branch token to the driver.
Photo 4) The driver is about pull away from Burngullow to climb up to Parkandillack as the shunter heads back to his van parked in the lane.
Photo 5) The train is about pass under Trethosa Downs bridge.
Photo 6) Our train has arrived at its destination ready for loading.
Forming the 6P24 and leaving 180 minutes early at 12.25 from Parkandillack to Fowey Dock Carne Point and stopping at Lostwithiel 184 minutes early at 13.45 for the loco 66 199 to run-around its train.
Photo 7) The train heads down the bank into Lostwithiel.
Photo 8) Having run-around its train, stopped at the station to pick up the token for the Fowey branch, 66 199 has crossed the level crossing at Lostwithiel and is going back on to its train.
Photo 9) Now on the final leg of its journey, 66 199 passes Lostwithiel station on its way to Fowey Dock Carne Point.
The last three photos maybe of interest to modellers, as pointed out to me earlier on by Nigel Tregoning at least two of the CDAs had different buffers so I decided to photograph each wagon as they past me (in the Westerly direction) and in fact out of the 36 wagon three of the wagons are different two have round buffers at one end and oblong at the other and one has oblong at both ends all of the rest have round at both ends.
Photo 10) Shows 375095 with round buffers on the London end and oblong on the Penzance end.
Photo 11) Shows 375118 with oblong buffers on both ends.
Photo 12) Shows 375090 with oblong buffers on the London end and round on the Penzance end.
The formation of the full train from Lostwithiel to Fowey Dock Carne Point was; Loco 66 199 and CDAs 375077, 094, 078, 076, 120, 103, 051, 097, 104, 071, 085, 072, 054, 032, 052, 105, 083, 050, 095, 114, 082, 108, 087, 074, 093, 118, 117, 090, 063, 116, 121, 113, 091, 067, 061 and 102.

CDA Final
Craig Munday

Hi Keith,

I guess you must have been inundated with pictures of the last movements of the CDA trips?

I needed to capture some images of RSS 08752 working with the CDAs at Goonbarrow (Rocks). The locomotive only arrived weeks ago, and a combination of non-working and foul weather had prevented me from grabbing some pictures. The day I chose was funereal in light, mist and mizzle covered clay country - which actually aided the photography as it kept the harsh light down, and allowed pictures from all angles. Thanks to the team at Rocks for allowing me to take these.

On the final day I was nights Lostwithiel so I grabbed a few shots during the day and then signalled the final empties away from Lostwithiel in the evening. When I joined as a Signalman in 1989 at St Germans and Liskeard I regularly signalled these trains, so fitting that I should be in the box for the final workings.

Two class 37s are seen on CDA workings at St Blazey in 1987 and Respryn in 1994.

Best wishes

Craig Munday

KJ's apologies for any mistakes - my excuse is that it is due to a CDA 'overload'.  Many thanks to for all your contributions but there have understandably been rather a lot!!!

Left to right:  43042 with 43194 and stock set GW08 in platform 4 with the revised 2C69 0900 Cardiff Central - Penzance, starting instead at Temple Meads due to earlier non-availability of the set.  At platform 10, Cross Country's 43239 has just arrived heading the 1V44 0612 Leeds - Plymouth (43303 is at the rear) and is about to change crews.   Across on platform 12 is 158769 on the 2O07 0945 Bristol TM - Salisbury and finally at platform 13 800309  has just arrived as the 1C05 0757 ex Paddington.

43239 was another original Western Region power car from 1976, part of set 253019 with sister 43038.  Transferred away in 1982 it was taken on by Cross Country in 2018 and has been a regular sight in the west country ever since.   43042 was part of set 253021 and also had a long spell away from normal WR work before rejoining the FGW fleet around 20 years ago.
