Diesels to the Seaside
Andrew Triggs & Martin Duff

A few views from the WSR “diesels to the seaside” event over the weekend for your consideration on the CRS pages.  Definitely a weekend of two halves, weather and performance wise.  On Saturday, a carriage defect in traffic had to be attended to and caused significant delay while the affected coach was removed at Minehead.  I worked two afternoon turns in Blue Anchor signal box, Friday and Saturday – having passed out for the box in 1996, I mainly work other boxes these days, so it was a pleasure to work the box with its wheel operated level crossing.  The sun was reluctant to put in much of an appearance until early evening Saturday.  Colleague and friend Craig Munday visited, coffee and biscuits were served between trains – always good to catch up with him, and eat biscuits.

The Deltic and Class 50 are seen side by side at Minehead at breakfast time on Saturday, 45041 is seen approaching Blue Anchor late evening Saturday, then again at Williton (note the new semaphore signalling at the Taunton end) on Sunday.  Earlier on Sunday I recorded a pair of Class 20’s leaving Doniford, also the Class 50 at Watchet in full sun.  A great weekend, and thanks to Andrew Triggs for doing the driving up and down the branch to get to the various photographic locations on Sunday.
Owing to the large number of photographs of this Gala already on our website we have found it necessary to reduce the number slightly on this occasion
Many Thanks

Riding the Rails of Devon
Roger Winnen

This outdoor event was planned many months ago where we intended to cover much of the railways of Devon.  However it was realised a couple of months ago that steam was coming to Devon on that day, so the timetable based around that. We travelled up to Dawlish Warren to spend some time on the sea wall before going on to Exeter to see the steam, then hopefully running ahead to photo the steam at Newton Abbot.  Eventually the steam was reported 50 late at Exeter, so an emergency timetable came into being.
We departing Exeter at 11.58 to Paignton to see the arrival of the steam and then onto Churston for the engines turning before returning back to Exeter and Newton Abbot for the ttains return run.
Further delays were encountered on our return journey at Par where a lady was stretched out on the platform as our train pulled in.  An ambulance was called and assistance was given by the train crew and passengers, only to find out that she was worse for wear being on the bottle, delaying us by nearly one hour.
