Changes in motive power and vegetation are seen in the four pictures spanning thirty six years at this South Devon location. Traffic is a lot heavier nowadays and the tendency for larger cars means photographers here now need to be a lot warier standing on the road .

1)  The first picture is 50012 Benbow on the Paddington - St Austell motorail service on 19th September 1982. Although quite gloomy and murky, there are two cars present at the rear as I made a note at the time ! Needless to say the motorail service in this final format without passenger coaches did not last much longer.

2)  The second picture is taken on 8th May 1999. One of only a few photos I have of a Great Western 'Merlin' liveried HST. Taken whilst awaiting 35005 Canadian Pacific on a tour. Wouldn't it be great if GWR were to do one more 'paint job' in this livery on a power car before they finish on the Londons ?

3)  The third picture shows then Fragonset owned 45112 Royal Army Ordnance Corps on 21st July 2001 on the 1Z45 04.30 Lancaster - Penzance railtour. A number of enthusiasts greet my presence on the road bridge in time honoured fashion.

4)  Right up to date - The fourth picture is of the 13.03 Paddington - Plymouth on Sunday 7th October 2018 as yet another IET usurps an HST to the recurring dismay of the photographer. No 'window hangers' on this train.

Regards, Clive Smith

Many thanks indeed Clive for your article and those unrepeatable pictures from your archive.
