10th January 2024

10/1/2024

Pressure is growing to withdraw all remaining InterCity 125 trains from service after they were branded “death traps”.

The iconic locomotives entered service in 1976, heralding a new era of rail travel in Britain. But train drivers’ union ASLEF says a crash late last month exposed failures in the train’s near 50-year-old design.

Critics say the cabs are constructed of fibreglass and plywood, offering very little protection in the event of a collision. ASLEF is due to meet ScotRail next Monday (15th) after the front of a High Speed Train - as the InterCity 125 is also known - was destroyed when it hit a fallen tree.

Many Thanks Keith

Trevor Tremethick
Hello Keith and Roger

My first for the year showing the two spare power cars 43094 and 43122 taken from Embankment Road. There are four by the hoist and one in the far sidings that I could not identify. There is a blue one in that group of four which may be the cannibalised 43091. The yard was completely empty. This is now happening often and I am again concerned regarding Laira’s future, with the loss of the XC HSTs and ultimately the GWR ‘Castles’.
Nice winter sunlight at least.

Regards Trevor

Many thanks Paul - both the HST's and the summer weather are very missed!

Movie footage of the Culm Valley Light Railway
James Brown

Hi Keith,

Here with another gem to enjoy on these cold January days. The Culm Valley line would have been a real survivor, using the last gas lit coach on British Railways.

Best wishes James Bown

Thank you for sharing this with us James, much appreciated - good viewing!
