Gloucester to
Severn Tunnel Junction
Including Dean Forest Railway and Sudbrook branch
Members and general visitors to the CRS site will be interested in visiting http://www.railmaponline.com        From the opening page a full map of the UK can be accessed which can then be enlarged to show every railway line in the UK.     Not just today's network but  lines from the past have been overlaid.     As you zoom in sidings and even tramways become visible.

A valuable tip from Guy Vincent.

A further visit to the Dean Forest - Andrew and Diane Jones.
Dear Keith and Valerie,
Diane and I embarked on our epic EV trip (electric vehicle) last Tuesday, noting that the Dean Forest Railway operates on a Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday during October.
We visited the magnificently restored Tintern station on the closed Wye Valley Railway (unfortunately outside the CRS boundary}and adjourned to our accommodation at St Arvans near Chepstow.
Wednesday morning was bright, but chilly, ideal conditions for our visit to Dean Forest Railway.
First train out departed at 11.15 from Norchard Low Level, which is the best place to park if you are not arriving by train on the BR network at Lydney.
Norchard Station was once the site of a power station served by adjacent mines which suffered from ground water problems leading to its closure in 1961.
The Railways main operating base is situated here with plenty to see and superb facilities including a cafe and toilets.
All the staff are extremely friendly and you certainly feel valued as a customer.
I have attached photographs of our trip.
It seems we had arrived at a very busy time with a school trip so I had a chat with the guard who suggested we ride in the observation saloon for a small supplement which he said we would not regret!
Ex GWR small praire 5541 backed on and we headed for Lydney via three level crossings which must be very difficult to operate during the busy summer months.
5541 ran round at Lydney junction now attached to the inspection saloon and departed at 11.44,
passing Lydney Town station non stop to Norchard High Level departing at 11.55, passing Whitecroft Station non stop arriving at Parkend at 12.06.
Parkend is currently the Northern terminus, but there are plans to extend another 2 ½ miles via Coleford to Speech House.
Again Parkend is beautifully preserved and a delight. Their is plenty of time to explore or just watch the run round and water replenishment.
5541 now on the front of the train once more, departed at 12.31 giving us an uninterrupted view from the observation car finally arriving at Norchard High Level on time at 12.45.
Paul Barlow and Stephen Widdowson have both visited recently and I hope my experiences add to this far flung outpost, one which is well worth the visit.
A big thankyou to Michael L Roach and Guy Vincent for their recent articles on the Pemboke Coast Express and my apologies to CRS for pushing the boundary a bit.
Very best wishes Andrew and Diane
