The North British Type 2’s by the summer of 1971 seemed to be used only on the most local of local trips, and you were very lucky if you got to see them working trains when out by the line side.
Yet they could always be seen at loco stabling points and in differing positions to the last time that you passed, so they were clearly being used for something!!
Exeter St Davids was always the easiest to see and phot the ‘63’ers’.These were taken 18th July 1971 and show a total of five different locos – 6308 with 6322, and 6322,6334,6343.
Their unusual spoked wheels can be seen.

Operated as a light railway there is a requirement for a train to stop at the crossing and sound its horn before proceeding.  Who was at fault in this case it is not up to us to decide!  Many thanks to Karl Hewlett who found the following picture - please use the link provided to see it.

Westbury work and
Looking into the 'Crystal Ball'
Guy Vincent

Sadly the warnings about the days of the HSTs being numbered have now come true and it is now becoming ever more common to see a 'cucumber' or two passing on trains to and from the west of England.  There is a major engineering blockade at Westbury that starts next weekend and continues until 3rd January so I shall go over and get some shots of the work taking place.  In a nutshell all the points at the north end of the station (12 sets) are being replaced (these mostly date from April 1984 when the panel box was commissioned) and the ballast is being renewed.  Signalling is being upgraded and the platforms extended to take the new, longer 800 series of up to 10 cars.  All part of 'Building a Greater West'.  GWR Management are promising 5 car 165-166 'Turbos' on Cardiff-Portsmouths, to be introduced in stages from January so see how that goes.  We also have to learn the new short-form HST's or 'Castle' class that are to see use on the Cardiff-Taunton route and possibly to Weymouth in high summer.  So, interesting times ahead.

Again, my very best wishes to you, Roger and all involved  'behind the scenes' at CRS.  Long may you continue to thrive!
 Guy

With very best wishes to you Guy and many thanks for all of the detailed reports and pictures received over the past year/s - we look forward to more, especially during the Westbury blockage. We hope that they have good weather during this period although unfortunately this looks rather doubtful. Many thanks and best wishes - KJ and RW

Gunnislake Branch Train in collision with a Parcel Delivery Van near Calstock
Roger Winnen

An accident occurred yesterday afternoon on the ungated crossing just before Calstock at approx 16.00hrs involving a DPD Parcel Delivery Van and the 150216 on the 15.45 Gunnislake to Plymouth service.
Neither of the drivers and passengers of the train were injured, however both drivers were shaken.
Road replacement service then operated throughout the day until the last train off the night being the 21.31 Plymouth to Gunnislake and returning as the 22.21 Gunnislake to Exeter St David's.

25th April 1988 was a fantastically sunny day. It started early for me at Heathfield and I followed its workings for the whole day.
Late afternoon it headed to Carne Point to work a rake of empties back to St Blazey.
Unfortunately I won with the sun but lost with the tide as it passes the empty harbour at Golant.

I hope that you won’t get fed up of seeing shots of 50149?.

Andrew writes :- Please find attached a photograph of Luxulyan Station looking towards Newquay, taken 50 years ago in Dec 1968.  The station opened on the 20th June 1876 and was originally called ‘Bridges’.
We had just had a light fall of snow and I remember it being bitterly cold and my cycle ride back to St Austell was perilous.
A connection is still in situ, in 1968, presumably to the old goods yard.

Train Simulator Link
Geoffery Harrison

You and Roger were kind enough to help me out with some information regarding the turnround of a steam tour at Par.

I'm pleased to say that the creator of the Cornwall and Devon Railways route in Train Simulator 2019 has posted  a video on You tube showing the arrival of a steam tour, its re-fuelling procedures and subsequent departure. The video can be viewed using the following link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5Gx7I_NuPk&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR0SZJTidezyq8SWD2zwR5pl9iYHtiu3IAtMkqko6mRO4Yw1eDJWst-8btY

I have to be clear though that there are some limitations in the way the Simulation can depict the movements you have described, and there are also some flaws in the signalling displays that cannot as yet be corrected. Also, I was not driving the loco and deny all responsibility for the fact that some movements are a bit quicker than would be in real life!!

However, I hope you will enjoy the video, an awful lot of work goes into representing the route as accurately as possible.

Thanks again for your help. Best regards,  Geoff.

Thank you for the link, I hope our readers enjoy it.

Request for Drawings of Alfred and Judy
Alex Lancaster

I'm a regular user of the simulator game 'Trainz', and a user has recently created a great version of the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, available as freeware for all users of the simulator to enjoy.

When this route was released, someone commented that it would be ace to have models of the Port of Part tanks, Alfred & Judy, to run. Another user has offered to create these models if someone can find drawings for him to work from.

I just wondered if you would know whether the drawings have ever been published in the public domain and whether they're available for the general public to view? These models would be freely available so nobody would be profiting from the project.

Sherborne Christmas Carols
Brian Pibworth

Please find attached a selection of pictures of the Railway Touring Company's "Sherborne Christmas Carols Excursion" from London Victoria to Yeovil Junction.  The action pic is at Clare Cottage Bridge nr Stowell, Somerset between Templecombe and Sherborne at the top of the gradient.  It is a frame capture from video so not up to usual standard and the rest just get worse as the light deteriorated to near darkness at 16.30, so I leave it to your good judgement to throw out the worst.  The rest of the shots were taken at Yeovil Steam Centre where volunteers and crew fettled the loco, turned it on their turntable and shunted the loco back onto the train for return to London after picking up the passengers at Sherborne.  Larger files if there is anything you like.

You will see that the last Yeovil Junction pic shows a green signal light.  This heralded the arrival of my train back to Axminster and so I missed the final departure of 44871.  It would have been too dark anyway for a moving shot but the images of fireman and driver in the firebox glow made it worthwhile.  Very pleasant people at Yeovil Steam Centre and a chance to exchange fond memories of out late colleague, John Cornelius, who is much missed there.
With kind regards,  Brian Pibworth.  Many thanks Brian

THROUGH TRAINS AT ST IVES – 2:
THE CORNISH RIVIERA EXPRESS
Roy Hart
The Saturday down ‘Cornish Riviera Express’ was a very different animal from its weekday counterpart. In the 1950s almost the whole train was given over to St Ives, with a small Falmouth portion detached at Truro. This train (14 coaches) departed Paddington (people didn’t need to be told that Paddington was in London then) at 10-30 am and after 1956 was made up entirely of chocolate and cream painted stock. A relief train, also of 14 coaches, left Paddington at 1035: 9 coaches for Penzance, five for Truro and Falmouth. The main (i.e. St Ives) Saturday ‘Limited’ was made up of:
BSK (3); SK (6); SO (dining) 1; K (1); FK (1); CK (1); BCK (1)     (FK = first/corridor)
This heavy prestige train was advertised as being non-stop from Paddington to Truro, but in fact there was a stop at Newton Abbot for the King to come off and be replaced by a pair of ‘Halls’. Thus the train proceeded over the South Devon banks.
In the short space between Lipson Junction and Mutley tunnel lay Mannamead signal box. Opened in 1908 to break the incredibly busy section between Laira shed/Plymouth Friary/Laira Yard and North Road East box, Mannamead (6 levers) was said to be one of the busiest boxes in the division! Indeed, the signalman there only had enough headway to lower his down distant signal for one train a week –the down St Ives ‘Limited’ on Saturdays. This arose because, not stopping at North Road for engine change, the signalman would have ‘line clear’ way ahead as far as Devonport.
At Truro the pilot ‘Hall’ came off in order to work the rear section to Falmouth. The train engine proceeded to St Erth with the St Ives set.
At St Erth, with two trains heading west towards them, the signalman and shunters had to be ready to perform some fast footwork. First the 10 coaches for St Ives would arrive: it would promptly reverse over the western crossover and pause in the up main platform for the two 45XX to attach. The signalman then reversed the crossover points and almost immediately had to signal the Relief (Penzance) portion, in addition to obtaining ‘clear’ from St Ives and going down to issue the token to the St Ives ‘Limited’. Within 3 minutes of this operation, the relief for Penzance would come thundering through (if all was well).
The WTT for 1959 states that the empty stock from St Ives would be worked back direct to Ponsandane, but I can recall occasions when it served as a local to St Erth (presumably when things were not to plan).
The 1957 WTT shows a through evening train from St Ives to Par, 7 pm from St Ives. This train ran on weekday evenings and came as a through train from Penzance.

                              Many thanks indeed Roy
Totnes 'Baby Warship' of The North British Locomotive Co
Geoffery Hurrell
Picture
Totnes Baby Warship early 60's Copyright Geoff Hurrell
I have attached just one other (rather poor) photograph, that of a (North British) class 2 ‘Baby Warship’ acting, I presume, as Dainton banker. BR, in their wisdom, allowed the western region to build their stock of Class 22s as diesel hydraulics with MAN engines by the North British Locomotive in Glasgow. The North British Company built a similar loco as a considerably heavier diesel electric. Either way neither was successful and were poor substitutes for the tried and trust 5101/6100 steam locos. I managed to tick every single one of the two ‘Warship Class’ locos, but my heart always sank whenever our holiday train appeared thus powered rather than by a Castle or King. I can vividly recall seeing D805 'Benbow' bounce alarming over the facing points onto the up platform loop at Totnes. Oliver Nock said that the only time he was ever really frightened on the footplate of any locomotive was on a Warship! At that time everything was tested over the ferocious Devon Banks. Among the highlights I saw was the Brown-Boveri gas turbine loco (nicknamed Kerosene Castle by some wag). I say ‘saw’, but I was playing cricket on Coronation Park next to the station at the time and the first I heard was the extraordinary sound it made as the driver opened up for the climb up Rattery. I am also willing to swear an oath that I saw the first of the ‘Western’ class locos (D1000 Western Enterprise) in grey primer before it was given its original and short-lived desert sand livery – in my innocence I wrote ‘silver’ next to it in my Ian Allen combined volume. I wish I had taken more pictures and more notice of those events; memories can easily disappear without trace unless preserved by an organisation such as the Cornish Railway Society. I commend you for your continuing efforts. Kind regards. Geoff Hurrell. Copyright

I have been enjoying your excellent website and especially liked the Devon gallery. I grew up in London, but my relatives all lived in Totnes and we spent two weeks each year there between 1950 and 1962. Whenever I could I spent time on Totnes station and it was there that I took the attached photograph. It shows 5029 Nunney Castle double-headed by a D800 Warship (name unknown) waiting right away on the down platform. It is my own copyright and would be delighted if you consider including it in your gallery.

Last Down HST Riviera
Clive Smith

Saturday December 8th 2018 may have seen the passing of an era with the last HST worked down Cornish Riviera Express. The 10.03 Paddington - Penzance passes Three Arches Bridge near Follaton west of Totnes in atrocious weather on the climb up Rattery Bank. With IET changeovers never a 100% certainty it was only today  (Monday 10th December) when an IET produced that another footnote can be added to the history of the  legendary named train..It is an incredible thirty nine years that HSTs have worked 'The Riv' with the last loco hauled 'Down' being on 5th August 1979. For the record it arrived at Penzance on time. The 'Up' gave way to HSTs in May 1980 and still soldiers on with these stalwarts of modern engineering. With changeovers to IETs gathering pace it is only a matter of months before this too will go. Alas I was unable to note the power car numbers. If anyone can contact the website with this information it can be added to the record.
      Regards, Clive Smith

Many thanks Clive for the remarkable picture and your information.
Picture

For the record Guy Vincent adds :-   Clive Smith's historic posting of  what could possibly have been the "final" HST-worked 1C76 1003 Paddington-Penzance 'Cornish Riviera Express' was indeed most welcome and worth recording.  What a pity the weather was not better for him!    I have managed to find out the identity of the HST that worked the train, it was:

Set OC47 comprising 43079 44060 42067 42381 42308 42509 42319 40710 41108 43180

How long before 1C76 'drops' and another HST turns up on it?  I guess we will have to wait and see.

Best wishes, Guy Vincent  Many thanks Guy.

The mention of the forthcoming railtour planned for the Looe branch reminds me of the last time (I think) that a railtour travelled down the branch.  On 10th February 2013, Pathfinder railtours ran the Hullaba Looe tour to Looe and Moorswater, using two 37s, 608 and 609.  My two pictures (which you might wish to add to the branch gallery), show the leading loco having a spot of trouble re-starting the heavy train over the crossover at the country end of Liskeard station.
The second shot shows the long train approaching Terras Crossing.  The very short platform at Looe could only accommodate the lead loco and the first carriage, so it must have been a lengthy process for all the passengers to disembark.
Best wishes, Peter
Many thanks Peter - your Liskeard shot is certainly dramatic

John Cornelius

It is now just over three months since John, a very good, friend passed away. With agreement of John's sister Jane we will continue from time to time using some of the Cornish slides which John left us - there were left with his blessing for continued use and are now in his memory.
