Visit to Exeter Panel Today David Tozer Hi Keith, I was among a group of twelve members of SERUG who paid a visit to the Exeter Panel Box. I did take some photos of the large panels which displays train movements. However I am sure Network Rail would not approve of these being published on the internet,. Entrance was made via Red Cow crossing so I was able to get this unusual photo of a Class 143. Dave. Many thanks David - what an opportunity. We under stand about internal photos on the web. Scotsman at Bittaford Clive Smith Since there haven't been so many photos of Flying Scotsman as you had hoped, I thought I would fill the gap with a picture from 30th June 2001. This was the 'Westcountry Scotsman' tour from London to Plymouth photographed crossing Bittaford Viaduct close to my home. Not one of my better shots. If memory serves I do not recall so much publicity for this visit as for the weekend just passed. That said the internet was not so prevalent then, smartphones had not been invented and thus neither had the selfie. Regards, Clive Smith. Very thoughtful and many thanks indeed. The east approach to St Austell Roger Winnen D1056 Western Sultan approaches St Austell with the 08.00 Bristol Penzance. The goods yard approach line is seen curving away to the left. This picture dates from the 29th November 1975. Copyright Roger Winnen. N.B. All this is almost forgotten track, from this location today (2018) all that can be seen is plain track on the bank towards Par. The goods yard approach curve is retained a s siding in case of the need to operate a service in West Cornwall between Penzance and St Austell. This siding terminates at more or less the ground disc signals. Many thanks to Guy Vincent for correcting the loco number as D1056 Western Sultan and not D1028 Western Hussar Cardiff
Roger Geach Flying Scotsman arrives at Penzance Dave Beckerleg & Colin Grover Many Thanks Dave Click Here to see more photographs of Flying Scotman in the Features Section 1823 36 years at Rattery Clive Smith Changes in motive power and vegetation are seen in the four pictures spanning thirty six years at this South Devon location. Traffic is a lot heavier nowadays and the tendency for larger cars means photographers here now need to be a lot warier standing on the road . 1) The first picture is 50012 Benbow on the Paddington - St Austell motorail service on 19th September 1982. Although quite gloomy and murky, there are two cars present at the rear as I made a note at the time ! Needless to say the motorail service in this final format without passenger coaches did not last much longer. 2) The second picture is taken on 8th May 1999. One of only a few photos I have of a Great Western 'Merlin' liveried HST. Taken whilst awaiting 35005 Canadian Pacific on a tour. Wouldn't it be great if GWR were to do one more 'paint job' in this livery on a power car before they finish on the Londons ? 3) The third picture shows then Fragonset owned 45112 Royal Army Ordnance Corps on 21st July 2001 on the 1Z45 04.30 Lancaster - Penzance railtour. A number of enthusiasts greet my presence on the road bridge in time honoured fashion. 4) Right up to date - The fourth picture is of the 13.03 Paddington - Plymouth on Sunday 7th October 2018 as yet another IET usurps an HST to the recurring dismay of the photographer. No 'window hangers' on this train. Regards, Clive Smith Many thanks indeed Clive for your article and those unrepeatable pictures from your archive. Cardiff Roger Geach Winnens Westerns (4)
Goss Moors Roger Winnen Don't forget - next Saturday October 13th at the Memorial Hall, Redruth at 6.30 PM Amyas Crump presents Peter Gray's West Country Just prior to Peter Gray's death in 2017, his good friend Amyas Crump was helping him to put together a special collection of Peter's photos to show to railway societies. Sadly Peter can no longer be with us – but we welcome Amyas with this collection. A footnote Re The Scotsmans visit.
I had been preparing for a massive influx of pictures of the visit of 4472 Flying Scotsman needing much pruning, however, it was not to be. There were big problems at this end as my BT Internet Connection was failing intermittently being off for hours at a time. I had no back up as both Roger Winnen and Mick House were away over the weekend. The lack of a decent internet connection was a frustration to me as well as to those trying to contact me. Surprisingly despite the thousands of happy snappers I have had very few pictures of the event sent me. For instance I know that Redruth station up platform was so crowded, that I had to kneel on a very wet platform to get the only picture which appears on the web taken at Redruth. There must have been hundreds of pictures taken at the time all of whom must have got a better view than I did! I have received no pictures of the scene at Penzance, St Erth, Hayle, Camborne, Redruth, Truro, St Austell, Par (Other than from Craig), Bodmin Parkway, Liskeard, St Germans, Menheniot or Saltash stations. Many thanks to those of you who sent superb pictures from intermediate locations and a special thanks to Craig Munday, who being an authorised person could capture shots from privileged positions. KJ In Memory of 'JC' John Cornelius who submitted over a thousand pictures to this website passed away on the 5th of September, his funeral was a private family matter. It was John's wish that a memorial service be held at Shepton Beauchamp Church - this will be at 2PM on Wednesday the 10th October. All who live within reasonable distance are invited to attend. The Cornwall Railway Society have gathered together a number of tributes and photographs taken by himself and others in memory of a fine railway professional and enthusiast. RIP. If you would like to see the fine tributes paid to John and some his photographs please click here. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ F.S. going home - Today at Ivybridge - Clive Smith Good Morning Keith, What a grey day ! Following glorious sunny weather on Friday and Sunday the Flying Scotsman brought the overcast skies with it again. At least it wasn't raining. I was in the company of three other photographers in Cornwood to the east of Blatchford Viaduct. Apparently there were considerable traffic problems on the lane at Hemerdon. Tree growth height in recent years now goes above the viaduct parapet so reducing the attraction of the 'side on' viaduct shot. The Cathedrals Express 09.00 Plymouth to Exeter St Davids is seen coming off the viaduct with 60103 leading 44871. As the train came over the viaduct the smoke trailed over the length of the train but then condensed into what you see in the picture. We can now all reclaim our pastime until the next visit ! Regards, Clive Smith Many thanks Clive Flying Scotsman and 44871 in Exeter Riverside at 12.15 Roger Winnen Returning from a weekend in London I was fortunate to catch a glimpse of the two engines in Exeter Riverside Yard through the fixed window of an IEP.9 car 802 set being the 09.27 Paddington-Penzance service.. The ride was very good with rapid acceleration, however those requiring food and drink are advised to have plenty with them as the trolley service needed some improvement. It was 2 hours 45 minutes before the trolley arrived at our seats, by that time the sandwiches were sold out, and a further intake was loaded at Plymouth an hour later. Please bring back the Buffet Cars. Weekend Duties for the RHTT Craig Munday & Mark Lynam 7th October 2018 Sorry folks, had big problems, my broadband was down from last evening until nine this morning. My BT system is unreliable, I hope it lasts out for a few more hours while I sort the post and pictures out. Both my colleagues are away this weekend so cannot help. It's a relief to get away from pictures of the Flying Scotsman and portray scenes that despite thousands of shutter clicks in Cornwall life goes on elsewhere. Many thanks to Guy Vincent and Clive Smith. Another not the Flying Scotsman Class 56 at Westbury Guy Vincent Rarely seen nowadays, 56103 was a welcome visitor to Westbury this afternoon, arriving light from Leicester around 2 hours early at 1740. It's reportedly taking a Railvac to Cardiff Canton tomorrow (Sun 7th) before running light from there to Eastleigh. Note the recent repaint, carried out during August in a siding at Willesden freight yard within a makeshift scaffolding & plastic sheeting 'tent'. Devon & Cornwall branding in place but will it ever venture 'home' I wonder? Guy Vincent Many thanks Guy NOT THE FLYING SCOTSMAN! Clive Smith Whilst looking at the South Devon Railway website I noticed that their 'Latest News' page of 04/10/18 announced that LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 41312 is to visit the railway from the Mid Hants Railway until the 14th October. This loco was formerly shedded at Barnstaple Junction. A hopeful visit to Buckfastleigh late in the day on 6th October 2018 found the Ivatt steaming ready to depart on a private charter at 17.30. The website says the loco will work timetabled trains every day during its visit. For those who like to see their steam locos in convivial surroundings rather than in a scrum then I would thoroughly recommend a trip to the South Devon before it goes. Selfies are optional. Regards, Clive Smith. Many thanks Clive Micro visit to a Mini Gala Clive Smith Whilst attention was elsewhere in the region some interesting activity has been taking place across South Devon. On 6th October 2018 The Paignton & Dartmouth Railway held a mini diesel gala. This was ostensibly a farewell to their class 25 D7535 which has been at the railway since 1986, albeit a somewhat shy and under used loco. It will now go to Buckfastleigh in a straight swap for the more powerful 37275. Let's hope the 37 doesn't become reclusive too. The 37 is seen arriving at Kingswear with the late running 13.00 from Paignton. The 25 is on the rear however the locos were switched around to give the bashers a chance to sample the 37 powering on the front of the 14.00 following the previous two departures with the rat leading. Regards, Clive Smith Time well spent - again many thanks Clive. Apologies but of all days I am having broadband problems. Todays Weather forecast was Very heavy rain up until 10.00 then easing somewhat. Winds 24 - 25 MPH veering northerly. Difficult photographic conditions. Flying Scotsman in Cornwall today. It is intended to put a selection of incoming pictures of this visit into a Feature. The dreadful weather improved during the day but a bitterly cold north wind followed! Newton Abbot Roger Winnen Newton Abbot Clive Smith With the light fading and sunset ten minutes away, 60103 Flying Scotsman and Black Five 44871 put on a show for the masses as they pass through Newton Abbot with the 16.55 Taunton to Plymouth "Cathedrals Express". The photographer had to jostle for position on the road bridge and hold my camera above heads. Good luck on Saturday ! Regards, Clive Smith Many thanks Clive. Classic Cardiff Roger Geach Classic traction in a
classic location. Roger Winnen The Flying Scotsman visit Saturday 6th October. Photographers please note Safety is paramount Please keep outside the railway boundary. At level crossings in particular, stay outside the gates, and be particularly mindful of trains coming from the opposite direction to which you are looking. We don’t want any fatalities. Please send your photographs to general@cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk Other addresses will not be monitored. Saturdays weather does not look good 89% chance of rain, wind speed 24MPH. Thursday 4th October 2018 Flying Scotsman and 44871 at Taunton Roger Winnen Something Different David Tozer 66013 with the 1506 6C53 St Blazey - Exeter (Riverside). Oh and another train came along - created a lot of interest. Never seen so many people on the overbridge at Exminster. What a surprise, well done Dave. THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM! Mark Lynam Very early this morning Network Rail's Class 950001 visited Falmouth Docks at 4.45! Well done and congratulations Mark. Thank you. 50's Golden Jubilee Clive Smith & Nick Kiszczuk The Class 50 Golden Jubilee Gala takes place this weekend at the Severn Valley Railway with an incredible eleven preserved examples running.
