Brian Willis, who is our only overseas member at the moment, daily looks up our web site and thanks our contributors for their high standard of photographs and reports. Brian, who lives at Gig Bay has further suggested that we have a 'Questions and Answers' section - his suggestion was prompted by Sid Sponheimers picture of 34065 at Bere Alston with its very unusual coal damping system. The only problem is that we don't necessarily know the answers and rely on you, our viewers, to give us the 'gen'. So, if we pose a question, and you can give the anwers please share your knowledge. Many thanks to you and to Brian for his suggestion.
A shunter swap had took place on Friday 2nd August with 08644 being returned to Laira whilst 08410 has come back home.
Roger Winnen has a further report on the oil train of 2nd August. The fuel train that morning came into the refuelling road, which normally doesn't happen. The engine uncoupled pulled forward to the washplant then reversed twice to attach to the empty tanks in the normal location. From there it pulled away after 09.10 for its journey back to St Blazey leaving the full tanks in the fueling road which was unusual. The Class 08 644 shunter was inside the shed, rather strange I thought for a Friday morning! However returning home via the beach and the wooden overbridge at Ponsandane one could see the Class 57 from the sleeper attaching to the tanks to move them to the normal siding adjacent to the large fuel oil holding tanks. On two succesive weeks, Roger, out on his early morning patrol spotted the weekly fuel oil train. Many thanks for these pictures Roger News in the railway press that the prototype HST has been fitted with a Valenta engine and was 'fired up' on July 1st 2013 gives us an excuse to show a picture of that train in Cornwall. Captured here west of Chacewater on 18th March 1975 by Sid Sponheimer.
I have had many additions to our fine collection of Callington branch pictures this week. Amongst these was this one taken by Sid Sponheimer at Bere Alston - the junction station for the branch. The picture, taken from the footbridge shows, what is thought to be an unusual fitting on the back edge of the cab spraying water over the coal to keep the dust down. Several of those already asked seem not to have heard of this, was it a one off modification, or standard?
Hi Keith
I'm back from Devon / Somerset. I thought you may like to see some pictures from Dawlish with the 6Z62 Chirk - Teigngrace timber empties passing Dawlish on 31st July. Cheers for now Craig Many thanks Craig Keith
I was so surprised to see anything stabled in Truro Yard that I thought I would send you the photo even though it's just a Rail Grinder. DR79273 and DR79263 had journeyed 6U03 from Par arriving at 04.09 on 1st August. Chris Jenkin Many thanks for this picture Chris. Nice to hear from you, same surname but no relation. Also thanks for the extra detail - it adds value. Derek Brooks Recorder of the Goonhavern Old Cornwall Society has sent in this exciting picture said to be of the first train calling at Goonhavern - it has certainly caused some local excitement with the residents out in their Sunday best. It is great working with the Old Cornwall Society recording history - if you have any other photographs of this or other lines in Cornwall please send them in.
