On the 14th July 2014 Roger 'roved' far and wide -and went out to check on Laira bridge. Roger lands at St Germans and takes a few views of history in the making - many thanks to our 'roving reporter'. A visit to St Austell on Monday 15th July 2014 showed that major changes are taking place at St Austell. To all those who hoped for an alternative to the storm prone Dawlish Route the news doesn't make good reading - still maybe once the old Southern route is extended to Tavistock sense will prevail and a fresh look will be taken at the Okehampton - Tavistock option. Meantime click on the link below. Many thanks to Martin Duff for drawing our attention to this. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-28307825
Keith,
This may seem to be a rural scene, but it is in fact FGW Class 143 143612 passing the site of the proposed new station at Newcourt on the Exeter to Exmouth line. The service was the late running 1313 Paignton – Exmouth. Construction of the new station is reported locally to start next month. Dave Many Thanks David If anybody has a photograph of the old MOD site at Newcourt it would be much appreciated. Its all history. Not recent, but just in, and a smashing picture by Roger Geach - he has more on the Home Page next month.
Evening Keith,
Well it was out into the country side tonight to that well known trouble spot, Stafford’s Bridge. No issues with flooding to night to capture 34046 heading to Taunton and Bristol. Dave Many thanks David Hi Keith,
I have finished the footbridge now and this photo might be of interest for the website. It's quite timely as I read some where about an application to the council to shift or modify the St Erth footbridge. I'm firm believer that these things should due maintained and preserved as part of the regions rich heritage and tourist attractions. The model is as it was in the late fifties and painted as per researching the Sid Geake photos on the website. It also features the details long gone such as the original GWR valancing and the smoke deflectors. The model is made from more 700 pieces and some internal detail such as hand rails and steps , are just detectable in the photo. Kind regards Steve Well done Steve and many thanks A sea wall which was breached by winter storms is to be raised to protect the main railway line to the South West Network rail has confirmed.
The plan to raise a section at Dawlish has been criticised by some residents concerned about their privacy. The walkway along the sea wall is used by thousands of people every year. In the 1840's Isambard Kingdom Brunel who built the wall lost the same battle with land owners. The residents seem to have forgotten that had the railway not been there all their properties would have been completely washed away! |
