All change at Hayle! With the rail crossing having been removed at the end of March, work is in progress on access to the up platform via the underpass at Hayle Station. R Brown is the main contractor, who has also recommenced work at St Austell on the new lift shafts which have been lying dormant over a number of years. New lighting is being installed in the station area and down the former Hayle Wharves branch together with resurfacing.
Whilst, perhaps, the viaduct at Hayle was not the most elegant structure it had provided an excellent view from ground level of the varied railway scene and traffic. However, the new Asda store arising from the viaduct foreground destroys the previous panorama, forever. Sad but true, as these pictures from Roger Winnen of the developing store show. Co operation between the Friends of Perranwell Station and Cath Lester, Local Area Manager and Dan Okey, First Group, has immediately led to a tidying up of the station, a real cut back in the foliage exposing the pump and original sign, an additional seat and a flower box to match the one that is already there.
Regards, Stuart B. Douglas. In our coverage of the BLS, L&C Institute railtour from Exeter to Penzance on the 10th May 2014 we were unable to provide any photographs of the train at Cattewater. However thanks to driver Stuart Smith who had specially signed for the route for the railtour we bring you this picture taken by Stuart Smith as proof. This picture and two others have been added to our coverage - see diesel railtours 2014.
Evening Keith,
Yes, we have had an FGW interloper at Pinhoe(2047)tonight. In pouring rain 150221 works the 2042 5Z11 Exeter(St David’s) – Castle Cary via Honiton which I assume was a route refresher trip or route learning run. The unit was due to return around midnight. Yes, I will give that a miss. Regards Dave Thanks David Saturday 17th May, 2014 saw members of the Cornwall Railway Society walk the Camel Trail from Wadebridge to Dunmere Halt on a very warm and sunny day. Departing on the 08.45 London service from Penzance and other Cornish Stations we alighted at Bodmin Parkway for the 555 Greyhound Service to Wadebridge running some 15 mins late. Arriving at Wadebridge other members from North Cornwall joined the party where we set off from the former station at Wadebridge now known as the John Betjeman Centre. A very pleasant walk then commenced avoiding many cycle riders on route, firstly viewing the junction of the North Cornwall Line, Shooting Range Platform and onto Grogley Halt for a well deserved lunch break, The Camel Valley was very scenic indeed with flowers of many varieties in bloom on this beautiful May Day. Leaving Grogley behind we headed for Nanstallon passing on route the extensive Vinyards on the Camel Valley where members sampled the wine. On leaving Nanstallon which at one time boasted a Signal Box, we soon arrived at Boscarne Junction to see a Bodmin and Wenford departing from the station platform. We then continued towards Dunmere. Here a well deserved drink was the order of the day, the temperature was rising, we had twenty minutes before the bus, and would you believe it! it ran nearly twenty minutes late. On arrival at Bodmin Parkway we also found the train running twenty two late. They say that the Cornish always do it "Dreckley" I think that applied today. Many thanks to everyone who supported this event, Roger Winnen And to Roger for organising it. - No doubt spurred on by the recent pictures in this section by Mike Bojko and Mike Roach, Sid Sponheimer has also been in the North Devon this May, and in Sid's case was also here 50 years ago. A chance to remind you that the CRS will be visiting Torrington, Bideford and Instow on our CRS Outing on Saturday July 5th 2014. See our outdoor events for details.
