Major work - a new footbridge at
Patchway
David Field
Good Evening Keith,
Apologies for the late submission, but I thought I would forward on some of the photos I took today at Patchway, where it certainly was a Good Friday as the station received the steps, lift tower steel work and main span of its new accessible footbridge.
The remainder of the footbridge will be fitted out over the next few weeks, and open during the summer.
Kind Regards,  Dave Field

No need for apologies - everything gratefully received.

Weymouth Tramway

33112 passes near The Town Bridge on the Weymouth Tramway on the16th August 1982 with the 09.54 boat train from Waterloo. An assortment of cars of the day line the road with an Austin Maxi most visible at the front by the 33. A Triumph Herald and a Morris Minor Traveller can be seen further along and look closely and there is a Ford Anglia but what is the car next to the Maxi ?

           Regards, Clive Smith.
Many thanks Clive - answer below.

Here’s a shot from today of 66126 crossing the River Fowey in Lostwithiel with a freight at just after 5pm. Comment from Roy Hart (Burma).
I would say that the photo is about 1875. Mixed gauge arrived at Redruth in 1866, but the rails look more modern, with cross-sleepered track, so later than 1866, I reckon. The wooden viaduct is still there, so before 1888. The down side sidings went in 1914.
The cottages on the right are 'Jacks Platt' a- well-known Redruth slum area, finally demolished by nazi bombers in WW2.  The post office (1957) occupies the site today.
                   All the best, Roy.
Many thanks Roy.
Mystery Hut at
Redruth
Peter Jenkin

This sadly neglected hut situated across the road from the station has remained in this state for a considerable number of years. It has had transport connections. It was certainly used as a rest room by Western Nations Bus drivers and no doubt CMT before that. Comparison with the picture above suggests that it was in existence before the buildings alongside. Maybe station staff used it as a 'tea room' too. Rumours have had it that it might be a tea room again or whatever.  We hope somebody declares ownership and  does a major restoration job.

Peak To Weymouth 1983
Clive Smith

On September 24th 1983 full headcode panel 46037 worked the 16.15 Bristol TM - Weymouth I seem to recall for some reason it was booked either a peak or a type 4 for Saturdays for the last month of the summer timetable. Certainly ran with three peaks including 46045 twice. Perhaps Guy has a better recollection of this month and type 4s on the Weymouth's.

Another picture from the Paddy Bradley Collection. Said to be Liskeard or Looe. We think neither, Any ideas?

Message at 07.21 17th April 2019.  Dear Keith,
Definitely not Liskeard or Looe. Looks to me like the original station at Newquay.
Roy

P.S. The original Newquay station was a one-platform job. Behind the photographer the track ended at a turntable (see old maps). Yes, this became platform 1 by the gasholders when the station was rebuilt in 1903. The station shown in the photo was built by the Cornwall Mineral Railway. As for the wall on the right, I'm not sure. There is a photo of old Newquay station in one of John Vaughan's books, as far as I recall.

Bristol to Yatton
Paul Negus

Pictures of what seems to have been a test train this morning at Bristol Temple Meads taken around 08:15. The power cars and coaches looked very fresh out of shops but HST power car 43093 Old Oak Common HST Depot 1976 - 2018 really stole the show. The vinyl work is outstanding and puts the efforts on the IEPs to shame! An immaculate 43186 brought up the rear.

The final photo is 43040 - also looking immaculate - bringing up the rear of the 08:45 off Yatton for Taunton. At least Yatton still has its footbridge, even if it is roofless!

                    Best regards, Paul

A postscript to the above photograph from Roy Hart (Burma)
Dear Keith,
This is not a difficult one. The date can be narrowed down to c1895. Standard guage stock (so after 1892); the clothes (no ghastly big Edwardian female hats, but one male in the background is wearing a silk topper -not, I would say, a common sight at Redruth station today!). The fashions pre-date the Edwardian era, so it's got to be mid-  to late 1890s. Signal post probably post -1894, when box opened.
All the best  -I enjoyed the coverage of LR open day.

Roy   Many thanks Roy.

A couple of shots of 43002 in the sunshine at Newton Abbot on the 11th April 2019.. The first picture is of the old and the new with 43002 on platform 3 with the 12.55 Plymouth - Paddington as an IET leaves platform 2 with the 10.33 Paddington - Paignton. The second picture shows 43002 side on. What a stunning outline for a train. Maybe now after 40 years we can appreciate this original livery as a design classic. I can't think of many liveries that can hold a candle to it. This power car is going to make a fine addition to the National Railway Museum in York.

Dear Keith,
You may know about the open day at Penzance on Saturday 13th for a selection of diesels including the 50 and 47 from the Bodmin & Wenford Railway.  The 50 is having another Network Rail inspection tomorrow to ensure she meets the N.R. safe specifications for running on the main line.
The 50 and 47 will return to Bodmin on Sunday with 73107 and 66714.    The timetable is in the process of being completed and I hope to have this soon and if so I will forward to you.
I write as a member of the CRS.

Hello Roger,
I believe your shot of the withdrawn 'Western' at Laira today is the first class member to be withdrawn, D1032 Western Marksman.  The loco was out of service from 16.01.1973 awaiting spares that never materialised and was withdrawn on 06.05.1973. The first day in traffic is recorded as 31.12.1963 so poor D1032 had just 9 years in service!   What a dreadful state it was in after almost 12 months out of use here!  It seems it is one of the rarest locos for photos along with D1042 Western Princess and D1066 Western Prefect.   I envy you having seen all these locos back in the 70s but enjoy tracking down the identities. I managed to see approx 2/3rds of the class in service with a few more in the scrapyard at Swindon.    Other Westerns that would have been in the scrapline area at Laira on 1st December 1973 were D1004 D1017 D1018 D1019 D1020 D1024 D1038 D1039 D1042 and D1060.  Do keep them coming!

Hi Keith,
I have just been looking at one of the pages on your website which includes details and some photographs of the VLR.

The gentleman wearing the VLR vest is Henry Frampton-Jones. He was co-owner (with his wife, Mary. Regrettably he passed away on 1st June 2018. He was 86. Mary is still around and I have been helping her dispose of her narrow gauge equipment (most formerly at VLR) from the former Derbyshire Dales NGR at Rowsley.

Thank you very much for writing in John, please convey our sympathies to Mary Frampton-Jones.

31st March 1983 was Maundy Thursday and regarded as the busiest day of the year on the railways with a lot of relief trains running. Remember them ? The train pictured at Plymouth is the relief to the Edinburgh - Plymouth which started from Nottingham at 14.30 and was booked for 45069 but actually ran all the way with 31262 solo on load 9 with no loco replacement at Derby, Birmingham or Bristol TM. I was on this train from Derby and if there was one certainty it would be that the 31 would be off at Exeter. There was no way an under-powered type 2 was going over the Devon banks with load 9. At Exeter St Davids my eyes scanned the stabling point. There were no peaks, no 50s, no 47s. There was a 33 and three class 31s, one of which was 31209 which moved off shed and then to my astonishment and dismay coupled to the front of 31262. I was never the greatest class 31 fan but looking back nearly forty years now in wry amusement would I go through that trip again rather than take a Voyager ? Too true.

Regards, Clive Smith
Many thanks for your memories and picture Clive.

Short Form HST's
Guy Vincent

Short-form HST's have partially taken over the Taunton-Cardiff Central local stopping services from the DMU stock previously used. The set forming the 2U16 1204 Taunton-Cardiff today comprised soon to go off-lease power cars 43027 and 43010 with slam-door carriages TGS 44034, TS 42026, TS 42024, and TRFB 40902.  This set has recently been hired to Hull Trains. 43027 was formerly adorned with colourful vinyls that were applied in 2016 to celebrate HM Queen Elizabeth 11's 90th birthday. These have been removed along with the FGW branding.      Two more slam-door short-formation HST's were seen on the route today with power cars 43156 & 43022 and 43041 & 43189 in charge.

Keith - the stone train photos as requested.  The train entered Swindon from the west (photo 1), went to Cockleberry Sidings for the loco to run round, then departed for Royal Wootton Bassett in photos 2 and 3.
Thanks for your interest in my photos; I'm glad that I'm able to help a fellow enthusiast.
