Hi Keith/Roger
A trip to beautiful Bath this weekend to see Status Quo in concert, in between I took some shots around the City, finally making it up to Alexandra Park, over viewing the City, well worth the trek up to it for the views alone

Dear Keith,
Thank you for such a prompt and positive response to my photos. That is so kind.
About four years after I bought a slide scanner, I eventually began scanning about this time last year, starting with my earliest colour images from 1978. I am currently only at July 1985. It’s a slow but utterly rewarding business - reliving each of those cherished moments….even the bad photos of which there are plenty!
I lived at Perranwell from 1980 to 1985 but grew up in Plymouth, then we moved to the Cotswolds where we still are. But my railway passion has always been for Devon and Cornwall. Having said that, most of my slides are of foreign steam from my trips to South Africa, Zimbabwe and India and then other places after 1985, so although I have a selection of Cornwall and Devon scenes I wish so much that I had taken more.
I do have some interesting black and whites as well though, having taken quite a few photos on three Cornish ‘Runabout’ weeks in 1974, 76 and 77. I focussed mostly on signal boxes rather than the trains. I am not sure why given that in 1974 the Western class diesels were a far more threatened species than the signalling.
In answer to your question, my photo of St Blazey was taken from a ‘Castle Air’ Long Ranger helicopter that was giving rides from the beach at Carlyon Bay. I asked the pilot to fly over the site so I could take photos. My fellow passengers didn’t seem to mind where we went so that suited me. It’s an interesting photo showing no fewer than three signal boxes - Par, St Blazey and Middleway Crossing. This was the very same helicopter the Anneka Rice flew in for the TV program 'Treasure Hunt’.
Quite an amazing photograph Nick - of great interest.
Very many thanks.

The resitting of
Ivybridge
Geoffrey Hurrell

Geoffery writes -  I have attached a photograph of the site of Ivybridge (new) station that may be of interest to someone. My late father, S V F Hurrell was part of the users' group who suggested this site that had previously been a coal yard when consideration was given to re-opening after the rapid growth of the village in the 1970s.

Kind regards, Geoff Hurrell

It's only a building site but it is most important in the history of the railway development in the area. Many thanks Geoff for sending in the photograph of the site and a mention of your Fathers name in connection with the user group.

An afternoon at
Avoncliff
Guy Vincent
A couple of afternoon freights passing through the Avon Valley and John Rennie's fine Avoncliff aqueduct which takes the Kennet and Avon canal across the Bristol Avon.

The original aqueduct pictured was built by John Rennie between 1797 and 1801. The stone used came from a nearby quarry but was of very poor quality and the structure soon began to deteriorate, a noticeable 'sag' appearing in the middle arch.  Repairs were made using stone from a different quarry and lasted until around 20 years ago when a major programme of restoration work was carried out by the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust.  Prior to that work the aqueduct was relined with a long concrete 'cradle' to put an end to leaks from the canal bed when this section of the K&A was restored to use in the early 1980s.   Avoncliff aqueduct is a magnificent structure, often overlooked in favour of its near neighbour Dundas Aqueduct just two and a half miles futher on towards Bath.

The railway passes through the canal embankment at the north end of Avoncliff aqueduct by way of a separate brick-built twin arch aqueduct.  This replaced an earlier wooden underbridge in 1885 when the line was doubled between Bradford on Avon and Bathampton Junction (see photos already on the site in the Bristol to Bradford on Avon section).

A pleasant reminder of years gone by - back in the 1960's, when K & V J lived at Calne and often used to visit this charming spot near Bradford on Avon. On my last visit I distinctly remember the local black cat waiting for me at the top of the steps from the station and accompanying me on the footpath across the then dry aqueduct - ah memories!  Many thanks Guy for reviving them.

Signal Box - last day
Dawlish
Paul Barlow

A few new scans of the last day of operation of Dawlish signal box. It was officially closed on Friday 14 November, but as it was only switched in on summer Saturdays.  27 September was the last day of summer Saturday operation. So last day in was in use. A friend on mine worked for the S & T department and knew the signalman so he arranged our visit on the Saturday morning.

The box survived for many years until it eventual demolition in 2013 - Paul Barlow.

Severe Delays
From -Cornwall Live
Trains in Cornwall and Devon were severely disrupted this morning with many journeys terminated early or cancelled all together. This is after the attempted theft of signalling cables preventing trains from being able to run safely.
It has affected both the Cross Country route from Penzance to Newcastle and the Great Western Railway between Bristol Temple Meads, Exeter St Davids, Plymouth, London Paddington and Penzance. Delays were expected on both lines.
The incident occurred at 7.18am this morning (March 17) and disruption can be expected until 12.30am. Customers are advised to check their journey on National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner before travelling.
The attempted theft occurred between St Austell and Truro.
No doubt Roger will have an 'On the spot report' as he was intending to travel today.

Gents,
For possibly the first time a Devon & Cornwall loco hauling freight wagons in Devon with and equally rare appearance of a Class 60 in this part of the West Country:-
6Z53 11:18 Oxford Banbury Road to Newton Abbot Hackney Yard via Melksham hauled by 60055 'Thomas Barnado'
Returning home from Exeter St David's on the 16.15 departure to Penzance we ran into problems in Cornwall, being held outside of Liskeard for 10 mins, for an eastbound service to pass followed by a unit crossing over from the down to the up line before we could enter the station. After leaving St Austell we were held at Burngullow then 12 mins down and running slow, stopping on Truro Viaduct, then Truro Station 18 mins down, a number of stops on route to Redruth & Camborne then 16 mins down, then followed a crawl being held at Penponds, Gwinear Road at walking pace and a signal on the approach to Hayle Station running 30 mins late. Penzance arrival was at 19.50 27 minutes late.
All this was the result of a attempted theft of signal cable between St Austell and Truro

HS2 Stone on the move
Guy Vincent
Somerset & Wiltshire are now seeing a noticeable increase in heavy aggregates traffic bound for London and the Home Counties, much of this being destined for construction of the controversial HS2 route between London to Birmingham.
Besides Merehead and Whatley, quarries at Tytherington, Machen and Stancombe (near Flax Bourton) are all sending out trainloads of stone with additional waste ballast coming from Network Rail's Westbury Recycling plant.  To get an idea of how much traffic is now running simply look at Realtime Trains and pick a location such as Heywood Road or Bathampton Junctions where most trains will pass through.

DB Cargo have contracts for this and are sensibly using pairs of class 66 locos working in multiple, see photos of the jumper cable between them. Railway Signalling & People
John Roberts

Keith, members will be interested in the Film Archive of Railway Signalling and People, an official project joint between the railway and enthusiasts, to record signalling sites before they disappear.
Currently the work has focused on the midlands and north, with only one local site at Lostwithiel, but as we have several active staff as CRS members and viewers of the CRS website, perhaps we could ask them to nominate as a matter of urgency sites for recording before the Cornwall Resignalling erases any living memory.
The work so far is hosted on the SRS website, or just search for FARSAP: FARSAP (s-r-s.org.uk). John Roberts.
Thank you very much John for this link - I hope that many people will be interested and contribute.

GW660 PAR TO NEWQUAY  BETWEEN QUINTRELL DOWNS AND NEWQUAY

Treloggan Footpath (FP), located at 302m 01ch, will be upgraded to include red/green lights to signal to the users of the level crossing whether it is safe to cross using the Overlay MSL operating system. Telephones will not be provided. The existing whistle boards will be recovered. The Overlay MSL system is being introduced to the area at footpath crossings with limited sighting. This system consists of red/green lights that indicate to the user whether it is safe for them to cross the railway. The lights are activated by wheel sensors that operate in a similar way to axle counters: when they detect a train, they set the lights to red, after the train hits the strike out sensor the lights go to green. Would all staff please note that, like axle counters, using metal tools or simply passing by within a metre wearing safety boots can cause activation of these sensors, and should be avoided. If the sensors fail the lights go into dark mode, they will be reactivated by another train passing or can be reactivated through a manual reset.

Many thanks for forwarding this information Ken.

RMS Queen Mary
Michael L Roach

RMS QUEEN MARY                                                              Michael L. Roach
Made its first visit to Plymouth 85 years ago today
The magnificent motor yacht in the first photograph is named Nahlin and was built by John Brown's shipyard on the River Clyde in 1930 – yard number 533. The next ship to be laid down, number 534, was equally magnificent and was the RMS Queen Mary which entered service in May 1936. The maiden voyage left Southampton on 27 May 1936 and reached New York on 1 June 1936. The ship held the blue riband for crossing the Atlantic for many years. In the second photo the RMS Queen Mary is seen in Plymouth Sound 85 years ago today on 15 March 1937 when making its first call at Plymouth. The passengers and mail will be transferred from the Queen Mary to the GWR tender “Sir Richard Grenville” which will land them in Millbay Docks from where the passengers will be whisked off to London Paddington by Ocean Express if they wish. The passengers would have been able to buy their rail tickets on board the  ship before arriving at Plymouth to save time. The third class fare for the single journey in the 1930s was 32 shillings and 2 pence (£1.60) which included an element for the short trip in Sir Richard Grenville and dock landing charges. The first class fare was just over 50 shillings (£2.50). In 1936 the GWR Ocean Expresses carried 69 percent of the 33,000 passengers landing at Plymouth which were only of use to anyone going to London because they were nominally (and actually very often) non-stop. The GWR pulled out all the stops to give the passengers a fast run because many were film stars, celebrities and leaders. In the 1930s more than a dozen shipping lines dropped off passengers at Plymouth from all over the world. There were other famous ships associated with Millbay Docks. In 1911 the crew members of the “Titanic” who survived the disaster were landed here; and the last ill-fated voyage of the “Endurance” started from Millbay Docks. The ship sailed from Millbay for Antartica on 6 August 1914; became trapped in the ice on 18 January 1915; was abandoned by the expedition leader Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew and finally got crushed and sank in November 1915. An expedition to find the Endurance succeeded in the last few days when the ship was finally discovered nearly two miles below the ice on 5 March 2022.

The Nahlin still sailing
Roy Hart

A little end piece to Mike's interesting feature on RMS Queen Mary.:  Nahlin (pictured) achieved a sort of fame in 1936, when King Edward V111 chartered her for  Mediterranean cruise accompanied by a certain Mrs Simpson. The American press soon got on to it, but the British stayed mum.
Today, Nahlin still sails the seas, owned by Dyson, the vacuum cleaner man.

Colas HST power car 43277 stands outside the South Devon Railway Engineering Workshop in Buckfastleigh on Sunday 13th March 2022 following its arrival on an Allelys low-loader on March 11th. Previously this power car has been stored at Arley on the Severn Valley Railway as well as Nemesis Rail Burton, Barrow Hill and Gascoigne Wood in Yorkshire.  This is one of five class 43 power cars owned by Colas for use on the Network Measurement Train. The power car is in LNER livery with an EMR logo on the side  following the phasing out of HSTs on the East Coast. I expect it will be in the workshop out of sight on the Monday.

Update 12th March 22 Mendip Rail and
Whatley Quarry
Guy Vincent

Another trip to Whatley Quarry yesterday (12th March 2022) found a second class 08 shunter present in the depot area.  In addition to 08933 which was seen last weekend 08650 was visible next to some loaded ballast hoppers.  This means there are 3 shunters in total at Whatley:  the American GM EMD SWI001 with Hanson branding, numbered 120 and named 'Kenneth John Witcombe' and the two ex BR class 08s, 08650 and 08933.   The remaining MRL shunters are 08296 (actually 08787 but not numbered as such) at Barton under Needwood, repairs or spares?  08643 located at Merehead and 08947 also away at Barton under Needwood for repairs.  08652 has reportedly been sold and is now at Goodman's yard, Wishaw.  Finally, also at Merehead is the GM 'Switcher' No 44 'Western Yeoman 11'.

HIgh seas at

Richard Poyner

Please see attached a couple of images from Dawlish around 10.20 this morning. The section of sea wall from Rockstone footbridge as far as Coastguards footbridge has now reopened, the section alongside the actual station platforms remains closed. The waves were already breaking over the walkway, especially the section not replaced since 2014. Still 4 hours before High tide at this time and people were already getting a dousing from the waves! The train is 633K from Liskeard to Westbury, presumably with used rail from the relaying works. 70 811 in charge. We got a cheery toot form the driver going past. Regards Richard Poyner.

Sunday Morning at Silverton
David Tozer
Gents,
70811 with the 0716 6G97 Liskeard to Westbury running some 86 minutes late at Silverton. This was due to over running engineering works between Newton Abbot and Exeter. The engineers traiin had been held at Totnes for some while passenger services passed it when normal operations resumed. Possibly the overnight heavy rain had been the cause as the fields at Silverton had large lakes of water.

Yesterdays Red pen tractor at
Westbury
Guy Vincent
Hello Keith / Roger
I was amused by Clive Smith's reference this week to 'red pen' entries in notebooks whenever a new loco is 'copped'.    For many years I have kept a separate record of locos and units seen around Westbury with a red line indicating this.  Usually this only gets amended when a newer loco such as a class 68, 69 or recently imported 66 turns up but today I was able to add a classic class 37, 37510 to the list.      During the 1990s this loco was one of just two refurbished 37s painted in Inter City 'Swallow' livery (37685 being the other) and it worked Scottish sleeper trains north of the border.   Following takeover of the former BR freight companies by EWS in 1997 loco pools were soon abandoned and they started turning up all over the country in liveries that previously were rarely seen, Loadhaul and IC Swallow being good examples of this.    37510 was later used in France and upon return to the UK was purchased by the Harry Needle Railroad Company who sold it on to DRS at Carlisle.   DRS later disposed of the loco to Europhoenix and it is currently on hire to the Rail Operations Group who make good use of it on empty stock movements and other traffic of a short-term nature.   37510 arrived at Westbury at 0041hrs light from East Usk, Newport for stabling only.

Regrettably 37510's stay here was all to brief and this afternoon it departed light engine as 0M57 1545 Westbury - Derby RTC.

See   Class 37.co.uk   for full life histories of the entire class 37 fleet.

An unlikely combination at
Charlies Gate (B&W)
Andrew and Diane Jones

Dear Keith and Valerie,
Please find attached an very unlikely combination even in Southern Railway days, captured in 2014 at Charlies Gate on the Bodmin line.
30585 was designed by Joseph Beattie and built by Beyer Peacock in 1874 originally numbered 314 in 1874 followed by 0314 in 1901, again in 1935 as 3314 and finally on nationalisation in 1948 as 30585.
Although this locomotive spent many years on the Wenfordbridge branch it was originally based in London on suburban services, before being modernised and transferred to work on the Exmouth and Sidmouth branch lines between 1889 and 1894. In 1895 314 was transferred with sister locomotives 298 and 329 to work the clays from Wenford bridge. It was noted in 1958 that the class was the oldest design still in use at that time, eventually being withdrawn in 1962.
The T9 30120 belongs to a similar era but introduced on express passenger duty within the LSWR, designed by Dugald Drummond, capable of speeds up to 85 mph and nicknamed ‘Greyhounds’
30120 was eventually withdrawn in 1963 and claimed by the National Railway Museum.

Very best wishes Andrew and Diane

Commemoration of Loco Exchanges Railtour
David Ward
 David remembers,

I was on this trip to commemorate the Locomotive Exchanges of 1948 not long after the new unified Railways had been formed to British Railways.

This was the Trip from London Waterloo to Exeter down the old South Western Main Line. It took place on the 1st June 2008.

It didn't go as smoothly as it should have been as on the way down, we were diverted from Yeovil Junction and dragged back to Castle Cary on the Great Western Main Line to go forward to Exeter. We then got delayed again by a service train and put into the Tiverton Loop for about twenty minutes. The old platform edging can be seen here.

On the Way back we were Diesel Hauled to Yeovil to pick our Steam Locomotive and at the end instead of running into Waterloo the trip was curtailed at Clapham Junction

The Locomotives involved on the Outward trip was 6233 Duchess of Sutherland and the return 60019 A4 Bittern.

Hope this finds you well.
With best wishes,
David Ward

Meeting report 12th March 2022
Despite horrendous weather conditions twenty five members turned out to enjoy the portrayal of the 'Railways of Wessex' by Peter Triggs. Peters evening, at which we saw a wide variety of railway scenes punctured by a few 'female forms', was further spliced up by question and answer sessions where rewards of 'Quality Street' sweets being presented for successful answers. A very enjoyable evening for all - many many  thanks to Peter Triggs for a masterful show.

Whatley Quarry
Guy Vincent

Following recent departures from Whatley Quarry of shunters 08730, 08787 (aka 08296) and 08947 only one example is believed to be present, 08933.    I recently managed to grab a couple of photos of this elusive loco from the road bridge spanning the quarry arrival / departure line.  08933 has been owned by Mendip Rail for a number of years but was at first kept at Merehead and later sent to Whatley where it was usually stabled out of sight.   08652 may or may not also be here, I could see no evidence of it when I visited last weekend.
