From Saturday 14th February through to Sunday 22nd February a Festival of Branch Line Steam and Diesel was taking place on the line. Visiting on Sunday we expected large crowds, but it was not to be! Possibly the higher fares being charged made people think twice. However is was a good day with plenty of interest. More in Inside Stories Features Page
Hi Keith,
The following link gives more detail about the messages displayed on the train information boards as shown in the pictures on the website http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-31469515 Jon Many thanks Jon. Pinhoe was in deed a busy place for a while with no less than three HST’s in 31 minutes. How Network Rail must wish that they had a ‘Dynamic loop’ between Whimple and Feniton. Life would have been so much easier to keep trains running.
Problems appear to have started around 1130 with possibly with the 0805 Penzance to Paddington being heavily delayed.. At 1307 the 1258 Exeter (St David’s) – Basingstoke passed Pinhoe. The then very late running 0805 Penzance to Paddington arrived at 1316. This was held until the Basingstoke had cleared Feniton. The Paddington left at 1323 one of the few occasions that two trains were in the single line section between Pinhoe and Honiton which is permitted with the intermediate block signal at Feniton. Next to arrive was the the 1010 1A83 Penzance to Paddington at 1339 which had to await the down 1028 1C79 Paddington – Penzance. This train was held at Honiton to enable the up SWT Basingstoke service and the very late 0805 from Penzance, which at Honiton was now 116 minutes late !!! to pass. Finally at 1348 the 1010 from Penzance got under way. Many thanks to David Tozer for his detailed report and picture. Please see a further report on this incident dated 17th February 2015 On Friday 14th February 2015 Kevin travelled down from Swaythling (Just in FOSW Rover ticket) and travelled to Cornwall. Before departure he noticed and took pictures of the station and the unusual displays on the train describer boards. Many thanks Kevin - a bit different!! Hi Keith, The returning HST power car was 43144 fitted with new vinyls, and is seen on the Royal Albert Bridge, Saltash & at St Austell on Valentine's Day 2015. Kind regards Craig Thanks Craig One gets a better view of the new vinyls, 'Building a better West' as 43 144 pulls away from St Austell on the down journey. This view from the one time footbridge at St Blazey station now continuing in use as a replacement for the long gone level crossing one time at the west end of St Austell station. 14th February 2015 Copyright Craig Munday Not only was Martin Duff at Yeovil to witness the departure of 50 50 but so too was Craig. Thanks Craig Hi Keith Another roving weekend, this time to Swindon for a colleagues retirement do. I called into Yeovil on Friday 13th to see preserved class 50 number 50050 depart the Railway Centre for its new future with Boden Rail. Fellow blue class 50 5007 Hercules was the collecting loco, and both locos made a fine sight at their former stamping ground. The returning HST power car was 43144 fitted with new vinyls, and is seen on the Royal Albert Bridge, Saltash & at St Austell on Valentine's Day 2015. (I'll pop these on another mail;) Kind regards Craig Many thanks Mike
We are most grateful to Martin Duff for sending us the following pictures of 50 007 Hercules retrieving 50 050 Fearless from its long term resting place at the Yeovil Steam Centre. P.S. Not knowing where 50 050 was heading I e-mailed Martin and got the following reply within about two minutes -the wonders of modern communication. Morning Keith, 50007 ran light from Gloucester via Tauton and Castle Cary, then took 50050 back to Washwood Heath.
Cheers, Martin Many thanks Martin. With many thanks to our regular contributor Roger Geach we look back a few years. With nobody else about but with the signalmans permission (You could do that sort of thing in those days) Roger Smith wanders around the Coal Concentration Sidings and takes a general look around. His pictures have been added to the Exeter to Exmouth Junction section. Many thanks Roger. What a fascinating railway landscape at Exmouth Junction as a Class 33 33050 running light engine passes by. The date is 18th December 1987. The large shed to the left is the Carriage and Wagon shed. The lines veering off to the left head for Exmouth Junction shed, the main lines to and from Waterloo continue on on the far site of the signalbox - the Exmouth branch connection, still double track at the time passes between Roger and the box.
