The presentation of these pictures has been delayed by one day as we thought we had a computer virus problem. Luckily our fears were not confirmed. Peter Bragg has kindly sent in this note :-
Keith, I've spoken to Maurice Dart about the road access to the bridge during WW2and he thinks like me it was prepared but no evidence of use. He did not know of the destruction arrangements which were prepared. Cameras were never allowed to record anything so evidence is hard to come by. Many thanks for that Peter - if anybody else can add to that I'd be grateful. A quick note to say there are two runs of the Burngullow sand this week. One Sunday night (12th January 14) down with 59005 doing the honours returning Mon 11.48 from Burngullow, and a Thur / Fri trip. They're getting them in before the Whiteball blockade a source tells me. Many thanks for that Craig
During the week Roger went to Plymouth and on his 'sortie' went on a search for what remained of the Stonehouse Pool branch from Devonport Kings Road to the waterside terminal. This is where the line crossed a road called Richmond Walk. Other pictures of 'remains' can be seen in 'Devon Galleries' (Plymouth Friary, Millbay and Stonehouse section).
Craig Munday was at Long Rock today (10th January 2014) with Roger Winnen and both took shots of West Coast Railways class 57/3 number 57313 which had worked the down 1C99 down Sleeper from Paddington. Many thanks to Craig and Roger. A very smart 1023 Western Fusilier at the tail end of the 'Western China Clay railtour which ran on the 4th December 1976. At the head of the train was a rather grubby 1056 Western Sultan which was withdrawn not long afterwards. The location is near Lostwithiel Park - 1023 was detached at this point and the train continued behind Western Sultan. A beautifully lit picture by Roger Geach Copyright N.B. This picture is also in the railtours section.
A visit to St Erth today (7th Jan 14) revealed large quantities of steel sleepers piled on the former loading bank. This weekend the St Ives Branch Line is closed on Saturday & Sunday with passengers using the Rail replacement Bus Services. At present it is not known what work is being carried out. However if these steel sleepers are used on the branch it will be a first as these don't have fixings for bullhead rail, no flat bottom track to my knowledge exists on the 4 miles or so to St Ives.
It is also believed that the crossover adjacent to the signal box and the sidings on the right are due for removal, these have not been used for many years. Doing a little bit of research on behalf of Steve Martin who is making 1957 model of St Erth station I came across on the web a map of St Erth station area in 1890. Surprisingly, the bridge which carries the railway over the minor road between the A30 and St Erth village did not then exist and the roadway passed close to the entrance to the station cutting across the line just to the west of the current footbridge. At some later date, though very long ago, considerable engineering works were carried out to deviate the roadway under the line. These maps are available on ;'Historical Geography' then browse 'Maps'' Roger took his camera to St Erth on 7th January 2014 and below is his photograph - Many thanks to Roger for forwarding the following information extracted from the 2014 Steam Tours Website.
